WOX TRAVEL CONTEST | WEEK 3
Dear @benoitblanc When I was looking for a contest in the Disconnect list, I came upon yours. I chose to share my experience with my friends in the WOX community after taking part in a trip to Sinharaja Forest yesterday.
As usual, my husband, son, his wife, and I started on a journey as a family. We kept our pet with our sister because dogs are not allowed in the forest. On the way to the forest, we stopped at a roadside restaurant for breakfast. We also purchased some snacks to eat in the jungle.
We heard that it has been raining strongly in the forest in the afternoons for the past two days. Hence, to come out of the woods before 2.00 p.m., we left our house early morning at around 3.30 p.m. Normally, the forest receives frequent rain from time to time. Therefore, we prepared ourselves with rain gear. This is not our first visit to Sinharaja; we have been there several times before.
We came to our destination at about 7.30 a.m. even though we planned to reach there around 7.00 a.m. My son’s main intention was to capture many birds, which is why he planned this journey. Unfortunately, he had forgotten his camera.
After paying Rs. 1800/- as an entrance fee, we entered the jungle with the guide that we were provided. We were prepared with leech socks before entering the jungle since there were so many leeches. Because it was a public and bank holiday in Sri Lanka, a large number of groups visited that location on that day.
Sinharaja is a rainforest, biodiversity hotspot, and popular eco-tourism destination. Most of the trees in Sinharaja Forest are native to Sri Lanka and many are considered as rear. This forest is home to Sri Lanka's special animal and butterfly species, as well as a variety of insects, reptiles, and rare amphibians. Also, it is an internationally recognized place and named by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage site. Sinharaja Forest is the ideal area to see mixed-species bird congregations.

There are four main entrances to this forest: Kalawana-Weddagala Road from the northwest, Rakwana-Morning Side Estate Road from the northeast, Hiniduma-Neluwa Road from the southeast, and Deniyaya-Pallegama Road from the southeast. We used Kalawana-Weddagala Road since it was shorter and more comfortable for us coming from the Colombo side. Because of the huge trees surrounded by the environment, we felt cool and relaxed. Our guide taught us a lot about birds, butterflies, insects, reptiles, and our nearby trees, and we enjoyed the natural beauty of the many species.
The guide informed us that the forest had received heavy rain in the afternoons for the previous three days and that it would most likely rain again that day. Therefore, we came out of the forest before noon. We took several photos with our smartphones, but we were unable to picture birds and butterflies since they were too far away.

We had our lunch on the way home and reached our house at about 4.30 p.m. That day, we had great fun appreciating the beauty of the peaceful and quiet forest, as well as seeing various birds and animals.
