Wood-Burned Art: Calvin & Hobbes Part 2
Hello community and welcome back for part 2 of my Calvin and Hobbes collection. Created by Bill Watterson, this beloved comic became an international hit in the 90's given how relatable and fresh it always was. Because he never licensed his work, you don't find a ton of merchandise if you are a fan. That's why I make so many of these pieces, even if it personally gets a little boring sometimes. Got to keep the lights on!
While I always use colored pencil for the characters - assuming I am adding color - I also often use watercolors for backgrounds. In this case, I used watercolors for the majority of the art. I thought it lent well to the playful nature of the image.
Similarly, this is another single scene, playful piece. This one was wood-burned, as they all are, then colored with pencil alone. Calvin is lookin' quite rad with his sunglasses!
Finally I leave you with a full strip burned on a wood panel. This is the comic that started it all, the very first one! Calvin uses a tuna fish sandwich as bait to trap himself a tiger best friend. Children have such wonderful imaginations and Watterson's ability to capture that in his comic is one of the reasons Calvin and Hobbes was such a colossal success around the world!
I decided to showcase these in groups because there really isn't much to talk about after you post a couple. There are plenty more to come but I will probably give it a few days before posting part 3 just to break it up a little. As great as the comic is, I have plenty of other art ready to showcase and plenty more in the pipeline as well.
So long for now, and thanks for stopping by!
