Passion Fruit

Passion fruit is one of my most favorite fruits. I attempted multiple times to plant a seed. But it didn't work. But now we have a well-grown passion fruit plant in our garden. It's was a naturally sprouted. My father and I fed it well because of my unlimited favor on passion fruit.

You can see, it is on a rock. My garden is full of rocks and slopes. But this passion fruit plant grows stronger and healthy.

My father has prepared a frame for it. So it nicely grows by handling the frame. They have naturally coiled cords to catch any object as an aid.

This frame is a horizontal one, so it gets sunlight well. I have seen two colors of passion fruits in Sri Lanka. Purple skinned passion fruits and yellow-skinned. In my house, we have yellow-skinned which is the general and common type of passion fruit.

Usually, fruits can be seen at any time of the year. But in our plant, it happens about twice a year. In a particular season, all flowers get bloom. I have not observed which season it happens, but I think it is random.

The passion fruit flower is one of the prettiest flowers I have ever seen. It has a pleasant fragrance too. Anyone can identify it by the smell. Many insects attracted to the flower due to its fragrance and color. After fertilizing, fruits born.

The young passion fruit is green in its skin. The inside is still white color and the seeds are not matured. As my mother says, passion fruit falls down from the vine after it ripe enough. But the problem is monkeys eat passion fruits even they are raw. In last season I wasn't home, so all fruits were eaten by monkeys. Even the fruit in the above photo, eat by a monkey after a few days of the photoshoot.

Passion fruit is rich of vitamin C and A. Also, it is a fruit with enough fiber. It is nutritional as same as all other fruits.

Passion fruit is little bit sour. But some are not. The fruits in our vine are sour than usual. It doesn't matter to me at all. When consuming passion fruit, we can use different methods. First, we can prepare a drink.

It is easy. Just mix the flesh of passion fruit with water, sugar, and some salt. Some people add a little black pepper to the drink. We can eat seeds too. I eat seeds usually. The drink is very tasty. You can find passion fruit cordial from markets too.

Usually, passion fruit juice costs 0.4$ to 1$ depend on the place. Once I purchased 3 fruits for 0.5$ from a street shop. This homegrown plant gives me fresh and free passion fruit unless monkeys attack.

Second option, we can eat as it is. Use a spoon and eat the flesh with or without sugar. Else we can add passion fruit it to salads.

If you interest to grow a passion fruit plant, just throw some seeds everywhere and it will grow somewhere. In my case, I couldn't grow one with effort, but I found a naturally grown one and treated it well.
