Secrets for Drawing Depth - Ran Art Blog
Depth Drawing Guide
The world is three-dimensional, but your drawing paper is flat!
These methods will help you draw the illusion of depth.
1. Volume
Unlike a flat object, a 3D object appears to have volume, and therefore attests to depth.
To draw that, make sure you have highlights and shadow areas in your drawing.
Flat vs 3D:
Good to know:
There are no lines in nature, so when you draw the form, do it gently, so it is easy to erase these lines.
2. Size
According to the rules of perspective. The farther an object is, the smaller it looks.
When drawing similar objects, if one is smaller - the observer sees it as being far.
3. Overlapping
Overlapping means an object that covers part of another object.
In this case, the observer assumes that the object that covers another object is in front of it.
This is one of the strongest ways to add depth to a drawing!
4. Horizon
Adding a horizon line, mountain range, or vegetation, will help with a sense of depth, and your objects will not look like they are floating.
Example of a snowy horizon and pine trees (pencil drawing):
5. Linear Perspective
One of the most powerful drawing fundamentals is linear perspective.
It is essential for drawing concept art, product design, comics, and many drawing styles.
Linear perspective helps you draw realism:
6. Atmospheric Perspective
With distance, objects have fewer details and contrast.
In addition, the edges of background objects become softer.
These methods are part of my depth drawing guide.
