My entry for week 105 portrait drawing contest.

Known for his version of the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", and other songs.

It was for the contest.
Basically I first try to draw the form accurately, and add some details.
Then, I pay attention to transitions in brightness values. If an area as the same value, it looks flat.
So, always trasitions!

Indeed. When drawing realism, not only transitions are important.
Edges are super important too.

It takes years to master drawing. I tell my students that they need to learn, BUT also brush mileage. Meaning, practice, practice, practice :)
