I just finished this carrots drawing.

Drawing with a fine liner, and coloring with markers.

It is part of an update to my guide for recommended fine liners.

Quality pens come with lightfast ink (meaning, ink that does not fade with time, after exposure to light).

In addition, quality pens do not smudge when used together with markers.

Pens can produce realistic results:

By holding a pen diagonally, and with swift marks, it can produce a lighter value:

You can use that to draw light values, and draw transitions in brightness values.

Example:

Here is an homage to George Henry Durrie (1820 – 1863):

The advantage of a pen is also its disadvantage: It is permanent.
That means you cannot erase the marks.

A solution is to draw first with a pencil, or to use a pen with light value for sketching, and go over it with a black pen when you are happy with the result.
