SPb Tube: Admiralteyskaya

Recently I started shooting the Tube stations of my city. And I promised to start a series of posts dedicated to this subject. Here is the 1st of them.

Clickable! This is a wall decoration at the Tube station 'Admiralteiskaya' at St.Petersburg. This piece of art is not a painting - it is a mosaic made of ceramic - several thousand pieces of coloured smalt. All you see inside the bronze frame are small squares of smalt of different colors (all were made artificially in the color the artist needed to compose the picture). It's almost like pixels on a screen - just they are very huge pixels. Up close, of course, the eye doesn't recognize the art correctly - only large squares are visible. But as you step back it all adds up to a picture.

Это не картина, а мозаика, выложенная из керамики. Она собрана из нескольких тысяч кусочков цветной смальты. Все, что вы видите внутри бронзовой рамы - это маленькие площади смальты. Практически, это как пиксели на экране - только это очень большие пиксели. Вблизи конечно, глаз не считывает информацию корректно - видны только крупные квадраты. Но стоит отойти подальше, и все это складывается в картинку.

The rest of the station looks like this. It is very bright, warm, amber-tinted marble-decorated space with a beautiful black columns. It is a fairly recently built station. It was supposed to open in September 1997, when the entire line was built, but it didn't, and until 2011 it was a 'ghost station' that trains passed through without stopping. It only opened in December 2011. It is the deepest metro station in St. Petersburg and in Russia (78 m deep).

Это достаточно недавно построенная станция. Ее открытие предполагалось в сентябре 1997 года, когда была построена вся эта ветка, но возникли трудности с постройкой вестибюля, и до 2011 года она была «станцией-призраком», которую поезда проезжали без остановки. Открытие состоялось только в декабре 2011. Это самая глубокая станция метро в Санкт-Петербурге и в России (платформа находится на глубине 78 м, глубже нее - станция Арсенальная в г.Киев). Не знаю, является ли она самой дорогой - ее финансирование съело больше 6 миллиардов (!) рублей. This is a plan of the Admiralty and shipyards, the first buildings that marked new city's appearance.. This Tube station is called Admiralteyskaya for a reason.

The partitions between the columns are decorated with bas-relief medallions of Russian admirals and naval commanders: Ushakov, Nakhimov, Makarov, Apraksin, Bellingshausen and Grigorovich.

Простенки между колоннами украшены медальонами с барельефами русских адмиралов и флотоводцев: Ушакова, Нахимова, Макарова, Апраксина, Беллинсгаузена и Григоровича.

The walls of the train tunnel are also decorated with an anchors, traditional emblem of sailors and the port city. Now, perhaps, that is all!
