Water strider / Водомерка
In Russian, their name -- Водомерки -- means the critters who measure the water; so poetical!

Как всякий художник, последнее произведение я люблю сильнее всего! Это свежий кадр, который я сделал вчера, почему я и выбрал его на конкурс. Может быть, это не шедевр макрофотографии... но попробуйте сами сфотать водомерку! Это трудно. Они пугливы и быстро удирают при виде нависшей над ним большой черной штуки, а ближе к ним не придвинуться - они живут на поверхности пруда!
Like any true artist, my last work is what I usually love the most, hehe. This is a fresh shot I took just yesterday, in fact, that's why I chose it for the competition. Maybe this is not a great beautiful masterpiece, but... try to photograph a water strider yourself! It's very difficult. They are shy and tend to quickly retreat at the sight of a large black thing hanging over them, and it is absolutely impossible to move closer, as they live on the surface of the pond!
Как получился этот снимок? Мне откровенно повезло. На самом деле, я лежал и снимал лилии. На краю садового пруда была решетка, на которую я мог опереть руки, и приблизиться к воде очень близко. И вот когда я снимал цветок, в моем фокусном расстоянии появилась водомерка. Она сама пришла позировать! День был безветреный, поверхности воды как зеркало, и насекомое явно воспринимало меня как часть пейзажа, а не как угрозу, и я спокойно сделал полдюжины дублей. Но освещение было так себе, поэтому особенной игры цветов тут нет. Зато хорошо видно поверхностное натяжение! Это мой первый опыт макросъемки этих насекомых.
How I managed to get this picture? Frankly speaking, it was a lucky concatenation of circumstances. In fact, I was lying at the garden pond's edge and shooting the water lilies. There was a trellis there I could support my hands, and get the camera very close to the water surface. And when I was shooting a flower, a water strider appeared in my focal length. Like it came to pose me! The day was windless, making the water surface calm like a mirror, and the insect clearly perceived me as part of the landscape, and not as a threat. I easily did half a dozen takes. But the lighting was so-so, thus the image got no fancy colors. But the surface tension is clearly visible! This is my first experience of macro-portraying those insects.
Axolotl / Аксолотль (саламандра)
Рядом с нами обитают очень интересные создания! Лягушек все видели, про тритонов все знают, а вы видели саламандру? Для этого не обязательно идти в океанариум, эту зверушку моя 10 летняя детка выловила сачком в канаве, у нас на даче! Сделать хороший макро-снимок было нелегко, но в итоге я выпустил их плавать в тарелку с неглубоким слоем воды -- и таким образом получил годные снимки.
A very interesting creatures live next to us! Everyone has seen frogs, everyone knows about newts, but have you seen a salamander? For this, it is not necessary to visit the oceanarium, my 10-year-old child caught a few of these critters with a butterfly net right in a ditch, near our countryside house! It wasn't easy to get a good macro shot, eing taken out of the water, they momentarily were loosing the shape and looked like a melted icecream... I ended up letting them float into a plate with 1cm water in it - and that was how I got good shots.
Here is the said plate, to give the impression of the scale and their size (less than a finger!).

А идея а терелкой для маленких саламандер сделала их контрастными на белом фоне :)
@art-venture, absolutely! plate with water helped in a few ways - made them well-lighted, and gave a good contrast. macro isnt like common photography, you have to take some decisions and preparations... to make more efforts :P
