Inuit mythology | Shaman of the North

Today, I am sharing with you another illustration from my Women and Mythology series that I made on Procreate. I really like how it turned out and it may be one of my favorite so far.

It is loosely based on inuit deities, more specifically Nunam and Sedna. Nunam is the Goddess of Earth. She is also said to have created land animals, and is often represented with animal miniatures hanging from her coat. Sedna is the mother of sea creatures, and queen of the land of the dead. She is extremely important in Inuit mythology as she can be both the bringer of life and death. The shaman's role is to make the journey to the underworld and appease the deity. Only then does she permit the shaman to go back to his people to let them know that she will send food to the hunters so that the whole tribe won't starve.

AMC's miniseries, The Terror, which I found quite fascinating, definitely was a source of inspiration and especially Lady Silence whom I used as reference for the face. She is a very intriguing character.
For the colours, I kept it consistent with my other drawings in this series, grays, gold and a touch of red to make her cheeks and mask stand out.
