En casa éramos cuatro hermanas y había la costumbre de comprarnos las mismas cosas, de diferentes colores, a las cuatros. Si alguna se antojaba de un helado, tenían que ser cuatro helados, supuestamente para que todas quedáramos conformes. El detalle era que si no había dinero para comprar las cuatro cosas, no compraban nada. Así de sencilla era la solución para esa disyuntiva entre hermanas.

At home we were four sisters and there was the custom of buying the same things, in different colours, for the four of us. If any of us wanted an ice cream, it had to be four ice creams, supposedly so that we would all be satisfied. The detail was that if there was no money to buy the four things, they didn't buy anything. That's how simple the solution was for that dilemma between sisters.

Una vez estaba de moda jugar con muñecas de papel y mientras que otras niñas tenían block de hojas con las famosas muñecas, aún mis padres no se decidían en cuál quincena ahorrar para comprarnos una a cada una. Recuerdo que Marbella, la hija de la maestra, y Mayeling, la hija del director, las cuales estudiaban conmigo, tenían cuadernos llenos de muñecas hermosas de pelos negros, rubios y marrones. En el recreo ellas me prestaban una para que yo la vistiera y jugara con ellas, pero yo veía a mis hermanitas con ganas de jugar, pero no podían porque mis amiguitas no les gustaban prestar sus muñecas.

Once it was fashionable to play with paper dolls, and while other girls had sheet metal blocks with the famous dolls, even my parents couldn't decide which fortnight to save up to buy one for each of us. I remember that Marbella, the teacher's daughter, and Mayeling, the director's daughter, both of whom studied with me, had notebooks full of beautiful dolls with black, blonde and brown hair. At recess they would lend me one to dress up and play with, but I would see my little sisters wanting to play, but they couldn't because my little friends didn't like to lend their dolls.

Un día tomé mis colores, hojas blancas y empecé a pintar nuestras propias muñecas de papel. Cada una de mi hermanas me dijo cómo quería su muñeca: manita, ponle el pelo negro; a la mía se lo pones amarillo; yo quiero que tenga una carterita y unos zapatos; la mía hazle un vestido de princesa y un abrigo. Al final de la semana, las cuatro teníamos muñecas con la que podíamos jugar. Me quedaron tan bonitas, que algunas amiguitas me pedían encargo y hasta Marbella y Mayerling me pidieron que les hiciera una.

One day I took my colors, white leaves and started to paint our own paper dolls. Each one of my sisters told me how she wanted her doll: manita, put her hair in black; mine, put it in yellow; I want her to have a little wallet and some shoes; mine, make her a princess dress and a coat. At the end of the week, the four of us had dolls that we could play with. They were so beautiful that some of my friends asked me to make one for them and even Marbella and Mayerling asked me to make one for them.

Una de las cosas que aprendí con aquellas muñecas de papel es que para tener algunas cosas no necesitamos comprarlas, las podemos hacer con nuestras manos.

One of the things I learned with those paper dolls is that to have some things we don't need to buy them, we can make them with our hands.
