ADVENTURES IN THE HAT
| En esta ocasión quiero contarles una historia real que me aconteció por ahí en el mes de agosto del año 2009. Estaba recién casado y decidimos hacer un viaje a los cayos de Morrocoy en el Estado Falcón en Venezuela. | This time I want to tell you a true story that happened to me in August 2009. I was recently married and we decided to take a trip to the Morrocoy Keys in the State of Falcon in Venezuela. |
| Como suele suceder conmigo cuando viajo, a las 3 am ya estaba levantado apurando a mi esposa y metiendo las maletas al auto para salir bien temprano. Así me aseguraba de llegar antes que todos los temporadistas que van a alquilar lanchas para trasladarse a las distintas islas. | As it usually happens to me when I travel, at 3 am I was already up rushing my wife and putting my bags in the car to leave very early. That way I was sure to arrive before all the seasonal visitors who are going to rent boats to travel to the different islands. |
| Por esta razón prácticamente llegamos de primeros al embarcadero de la hermosa ciudad de Chichiriviche luego de pasar por los imponentes criaderos de flamencos y garzas al costado de la carretera que hacen que uno les eche colirios a los ojos. | For this reason, we practically arrived first at the pier of the beautiful town of Chichiriviche after passing by the imposing flamingo and heron farms on the side of the road that make you throw eye drops in their eyes. |
| Decidimos ir a Cayo Sombrero. Es una isla que en mi opinión es un paraíso en esta tierra. Íbamos mi esposa, sus dos hermanos, mi suegra, mi concuñada y mi sobrino. Además, se nos unió mi suegro y su esposa. | We decided to go to Cayo Sombrero. It is an island that in my opinion is a paradise on this earth. We were my wife, her two brothers, my mother-in-law, my sister-in-law and my nephew. In addition, we were joined by my father-in-law and his wife. |
Al llegar a este hermoso lugar, nos instalamos debajo de las palmeras y manglares y comenzamos a bañarnos y a jugar en la playa. Mi suegro estaba preparando una deliciosa comida mientras que mi suegra se había quedado dormida sobre la arena.
When we arrived at this beautiful place, we settled under the palm trees and mangroves and began to bathe and play on the beach. My father-in-law was preparing a delicious meal while my mother-in-law had fallen asleep on the sand.
| Yo por mi parte me puse a bucear con mi esposa y la verdad es que era un espectáculo ver aquel arrecife coralino. En ese lugar del caribe se podían observar cardúmenes de peces. Había peces loros, corocoros, morenas, peces cirujanos; nos sorprendió mucho que vimos un par de peces León y una manta raya. Así se nos pasaron 2 horas sin que nos diéramos cuenta. | I started diving with my wife and the truth is that it was a spectacle to see that coral reef. In that part of the Caribbean, you could see schools of fish. There were parrot fish, corocoros, moray eels, surgeon fish; we were very surprised to see a couple of lion fish and a manta ray. Two hours went by without us noticing. |
| Entre refrescos, galletas con pepitonas, vuelve a la vida y esas cosas únicas del mar, nos percatamos que a unos 200 metros de la orilla un par de hombres nos gritaban ¡auxilio, ayúdenme! | Between soft drinks, cookies with pepitonas, come back to life and those unique things of the sea, we noticed that about 200 meters from the shore a couple of men were shouting "help me, help me! |
| Resulta que eran dos turistas argentinos que estaban de vacaciones en Venezuela y se aventuraron a hacer snorkeling en el hermoso arrecife del cayo y de la nada se dieron cuenta que la marea los había alejado de la seguridad y se estaban ahogando. | It turns out that they were two Argentinean tourists on vacation in Venezuela and they ventured out to snorkel in the beautiful reef of the key and out of nowhere they realized that the tide had pulled them away from safety and they were drowning. |
| Sin pensarlo dos veces, mi cuñado y yo nos pusimos las chapaletas y salimos al rescate de este par de vacacionistas extranjeros. Un par de minutos después llegamos y les dimos una mano, al instante llego un lanchero que oyó los gritos de las personas y se fue como rayo a salvar a estos chicos. Lo más gracioso es que de regreso nos montamos en la lancha con los rescatados y así dimos un paseo gratis. | Without a second thought, my brother-in-law and I put on our dinghies and went to the rescue of this pair of foreign vacationers. A couple of minutes later we arrived and gave them a hand, instantly a boatman arrived who heard the screams of the people and went like lightning to save these guys. The funniest thing is that on the way back we got on the boat with the rescued people and went for a free ride. |
| Así llegados a la orilla de nuevo apenas nos dimos cuenta que iba a ser la hora de partir de vuelta a nuestras casas. Solo duró un día esta aventura, pero vaya que me divertí y aún recuerdo este día con ganas de rememorarla y repetirla. | This adventure only lasted one day, but I had a lot of fun and I still remember this day with the desire to remember and repeat it. |

Interesante relato donde una sublime marea arrastra silenciosamente a dos cuerpos los cuales al verse en peligro deciden gritar pidiendo auxilio, pudiendo encontrar a dos buenos nadadores que le brinden el apoyo.
