Unplanned Trip || WOX TRAVEL CONTEST-WEEK 12

Saya mulai berjalan menurun melewati jalanan berbatu kasar.

Penunjuk jalan menunjukkan jarak air terjun sekitar 300 meter.

Demikian travel story perjalanan saya menuju Air Terjun Pungbunga, semoga berkenan. Terima kasih kepada @benoitblanc dan wox community for organizing this contest. This could be my Submission for this week edition.

English Version

Sometimes an idea for a journey can suddenly arise without careful planning and preparation. An idea that sometimes emerges as a way to momentarily forget the problems at hand. It can also be called a brief escape, with the hope of helping the mind generate a new idea or perhaps not at all.

That day, my mind was a bit cluttered with various issues, from work to life. I accelerated my vehicle towards a relatively quiet road, without direction or purpose, avoiding traffic jams. Until I reached a region in Maros, Tompobulu District. My memory went back to a trip in 2018 when I passed through this area to find a landscape photography spot. Suddenly, an idea sparked to retrace my steps to the waterfall I had visited before, Pungbunga waterfall.

Luckily, my camera equipment was neatly stored in the car. I checked the camera battery's condition; it was still sufficiently charged, but to be safe, I removed the battery from the camera to prevent it from draining. I used a gorilla tripod for my tripod. Filters and holders were neatly stored in a bag. I continued my journey through several villages in the Tompobulu area.

When passing along the river's edge, I stopped for a moment to enjoy the karst rock formations in the mostly dry river. I had been to this place before, but the landscape had changed, perhaps due to some construction near it. The lush trees that used to cover the river had disappeared, as if affected by erosion. This river had experienced severe flash floods in the past, maybe that's why.

I continued my journey on a smooth concrete road, passing through houses, plantations, and dry rice fields. As I approached the roadside, the trees began to transform into a pine forest. On the left side of the road, there was a steep cliff facing the Bulusaraung mountain range. I cautiously navigated this narrow road, occasionally encountering vehicles from the opposite direction, forcing me to slow down.

More than an hour had passed as I crossed a fairly new bridge, trying to recall where this waterfall was located. I eventually reached the end of the road. The smooth road had turned into rough, rocky terrain. My instincts told me something was wrong; I didn't remember passing through this path before. I turned my car back to the new bridge. It turned out I had missed the turnoff to the waterfall by a significant distance.

I parked my vehicle on the side of the road to avoid blocking it, grabbed my camera equipment and tripod, and exchanged my work shoes for sandals. Unfortunately, I had forgotten to bring my usual hiking sandals, so I had to make do with flip-flops, hoping they wouldn't break on the way.

I started descending on the rocky, uneven path. If my vehicle had been a 4WD off-road vehicle, it would have been easier to traverse this path and park right next to the Pungbunga waterfall. However, with my small city car, I imagined I would face difficulties, so I didn't regret leaving it far behind.

The signpost indicated that the waterfall was about 300 meters away. From a distance, I could see the rocky hill within the Bulusaraung mountain area. I took a picture using my smartphone. The sound of falling water began to grow louder, a sign that the waterfall was getting closer. I faintly heard voices from down below, possibly other visitors.

My knees trembled a bit when I reached the flat ground facing the Pungbunga waterfall. The decision to wear flip-flops was clearly a big mistake, and it had cost me a lot of energy on the way down.

I took a short break to reach a signpost containing information about the waterfall. I learned some new facts, such as the fact that Pungbunga waterfall never dries up in any season. This waterfall was the fifth in the river's upstream order, meaning there were four more waterfalls above it that I could explore and photograph later. I also learned about some incidents that occurred in the years 2020-2021, which claimed several lives. While the waterfall had a tempting natural pool for swimming, no one knew that it had a depth of about 10-15 meters with dangerous currents.

I prepared to take photos. There were some teenage boys and girls among the visitors at that time, along with an elderly man and a friendly dog. I took several photos with various compositions, but unfortunately, the sky turned unfriendly, suddenly becoming overcast with a drizzle. Thank God, I finally got to see rain again. However, I had to stop taking photos due to the rain.

The rain came at an inconvenient time, but I was satisfied with what I had achieved. I had managed to capture some good photos at this location.

Not much has changed at the Pungbunga waterfall tourist spot since my visit in 2018; in fact, some of the facilities that were once there have deteriorated severely. There are no food or drink vendors or other supporting facilities. However, the waterfall has become even more lush and natural, with a fairly spacious field for setting up tents, and there are signs of bonfire remnants in the field. This location is often used as a camping ground for nature enthusiasts.

So, that's the travel story of my journey to Pungbunga Waterfall. I hope you find it enjoyable. Thank you to @benoitblanc dan wox community for organizing this contest. This could be my Submission for this week edition.
