2021 Peugeot 5008 large SUV revealed: price specs and release date

The Peugeot 5008 has done a remarkable job of transforming itself to stay popular and relevant over the years. It first appeared on the new car scene in 2010 as a large, practical MPV, but as the popularity of that type of car waned, in 2017 Peugeot cleverly turned it into a large SUV.

Being based on the smaller 3008 family SUV, but with an elongated body to enable it to accommodate seven seats, the Peugeot 5008 remains as practical for occupants as an MPV, yet it’s engaging to drive and exceptionally good value for money.

Even though the 5008 has wiped the floor with rivals at the annual What Car? Awards, taking the large SUV crown for each of the past three years, time is not on its side. That's because the large SUV class has become more crowded than ever with the arrival of a number of new models that include the new Ford Kuga and Seat’s new Tarraco.

So the French car maker has treated the 5008 to a raft of exterior styling tweaks and updated its technology and driver aids. On the outside, LED headlights and tail lights have become standard across the range, the front grille has been redesigned and the bonnet now has the 5008 model name emblazoned across its nose.

While the 5008 retains Peugeot’s trademark small steering wheel, which is designed to provide a view of the instruments over, rather than through it, the 12.3in i-Cockpit digital dashboard has been upgraded to make it clearer and easier to read.

The centrally mounted infotainment touchscreen has also been improved and has grown from 8.0in to 10in, making it easier for drivers to see its icons.

Plusher interior trim has been introduced across the range, including Alcantara or Nappa leather or upholstery on GT and GT Pack models, and there's the option of Nappa leather with distinctive Tramontane stitching on all trim levels.

Trim levels have been reduced to three for the 2021 model: Active, Allure and GT. Rather than offering buyers a chance to add individual options, each trim level can be upgraded to Pack status to add a bundle of extras.

GT and GT Pack models have a different grille to mark them out as the range-topping trim levels, and can be further enhanced with a Black Pack that adds glossy black exterior trim inserts and satin black badges.

The facelifted 5008 will initially be offered with the same engine line up as the outgoing model. That means buyers wanting a petrol model can choose from the three-cylinder 1.2-litre PureTech 130 or the four-cylinder 1.6 Pure Tech 180, and diesel buyers can have either the 1.5 BlueHDi 130 or the 2.0 BlueHDi 180.

Both of the lower powered engines can be specified with a six-speed manual or eight speed automatic gearbox, but both the larger engines come only as autos.

A plug-in hybrid version of the 5008 will join the line up later in 2021.

The new 5008 comes with the latest driver aids, including a night vision system that can detect pedestrians and animals at night and in situations with reduced visibility, at a distance of up to 250 metres.

The optional adaptive cruise control system now has a stop and go function that enables it to stop in traffic and then automatically pull away again when the traffic starts to move. A lane position assist system can also be added that will help keep car in position in its lane while cruise control is active.

Value for money has always been a strong point of the 5008; it’s priced to match close rivals while beating them on equipment. Although prices for the 2021 5008 haven’t yet been announced, we don’t expect them to rise significantly from the outgoing car, which starts at £28,980.

That may be higher than the cheapest Skoda Kodiaq or Seat Tarraco, but it’s worth remembering that our Target Price discounts could shave a tidy amount off that sum before long.
