RE: Hello dear steemians, what can be done for our platform to attract new users and investors?

in WORLD OF XPILAR2 years ago (edited)

I have not yet dealt with splinterlands. Therefore, I cannot assess the concept and the interaction with the blockchain.

I'm not a gamer either, but a few years ago I already programmed a board game with "AI" (so you could play against the computer).
Therefore, I would like to briefly clarify (also to all enthusiastic commentators) what such a game development means. It's not enough to be very enthusiastic or to try it out. You need a game concept, appropriate graphics, interaction definitions... you don't just do that on the side...

In order to really start such a project from the community, much more input and concrete suggestions are needed. At least if you don't want to develop a bad copy of an existing game...

I completely agree with you @moecki and hope that there will be a lot of input on this from developers, witnesses and steemit.inc and of course users in steem/steemit

I hope that @remlaps can also join the debate here and hear his thoughts on it

I'm a big fan of the idea of putting games on Steem, and I also like the idea you present to link the game concept to the Steem ecosystem. In general, my opinion is that Steem is a great platform for game creation because of the availability of custom_json transactions. Basically, anything that can be programmed in a traditional environment can also be programmed as a blockchain game with little requirement for specialized blockchain or smart contract knowledge (subject to performance constraints).

That said, with his background as a game developer, Matt was in an advantageous position to really capitalize on it with SteemMonsters/SplinterLands.

Coincidentally, I came across this article last week: The Spectacular Collapse of CryptoKitties, the First Big Blockchain Game, and I thought this point was salient to your post:

“I think the biggest problem blockchain games have right now is they’re not fun, and if they’re not fun, people don’t want to invest in the game itself,” says Newzoo’s Vicol. “Everyone who spends money wants to leave the game with more money than they spent.”

As I recall, when new players joined SteemMonsters, they quickly started looking for bots to automate it because the game itself really wasn't all that engaging. It was about rewards as much as entertainment. Not sure how it has evolved in the last couple of years.

Also, I'm not sure how much the game really helped the blockchain. Yes, it brought people, but I'm not sure how many of them turned into bloggers or curators. Yes, it encouraged people to stake tokens for resource credits, but most of the investment seems to have gone into layer-2 tokens and card delegation markets.

Anyway, all that is to say that I like the idea, but it comes with challenges. In sum:

  • How to prioritize entertainment before rewards (same challenge we're facing with content creation)
  • Development funding
  • The right mix of idea & skills (including programming, hosting/infrastructure, art work, and whatever else)
  • How to leverage it to drive investment

thank you @remlaps for your feedback

There is a lot to be considered when such a game is to be launched, wish I had the facet of it. But I hope that the idea of such a game can be realized and that developers can get on board with steemit.inc.

The way it is today, I also think we need to bring in fun things such as games that can attract more users and investors.

"The Spectacular Collapse of CryptoKitties" thanks for the link, it was very interesting to read.

It's not easy, maybe a separate pool of steem-on tokens that can be exchanged for steem, for example 1000 steem-on tokens are worth 1 steem. There could be a pre-sale of avatars (possibly NFTs) to the players that have to be bought for steem and that it is possible to buy up to dolphin level in the game, hope more people will come up with ideas for this

Development funding
The right mix of ideas & skills (including programming, hosting/infrastructure, art work, and whatever else)
How to leverage it to drive investment

Good question
If we are going to make this happen, I think we need steemit.inc to join in or give support to the project.
If it is to be profitable for investors, it must cost something to play the game that can give investors returns and programming, hosting/infrastructure, art work, and whatever else can be paid
