Mourão Castle Tower

Little remains of the 17th century fortifications included within Mourão Castle but the wide mediaeval wall still exists, constituted of marble, slate and granite.

The castle of Mourão was started to be built in the 14th century, during the reign of King Alfonso IV of Portugal, with a somewhat irregular trapezoidal enclosure, defended by communicating towers by allure, and a main door protected by two quadrangular towers, as was usual in Gothic military projects. Inside, the houses of the old alcalde, located on the northern slope and attached to the wall, stand out.

In the first half of the 16th century, two important royal architects, the brothers Francisco and Diogo de Arruda, intervened in the ensemble, their responsibility being the barbican and the surrounding moat.

After the proclamation of independence in 1640, the border position of Mourão determined the reform of its defensive arrangements. The work carried out by Nicolau de Langres and Pierre de Saint-Colombe, following the designs of Sébastien Vauban, provided the medieval castle with a double wall belt, adapted to the horizontal firing of the Six Hundred War, with pointed ravelins and other defensive spaces tending towards starry plants.
