In the twilight of the enchanted portico
Of Bruges, in other eras, I have lived before;
I saw the temples of Egypt with Loti;
I cast flowers into the sacred river in India.
In the opalized misty horizon,
Before the Bosphorus, I wandered, thinking of you!
I knew the silence of the cloisters
By the nacre and brocade sunsets...
I bit the white roses of Isfahan
And the taste of ash was always the same!
Always the barbarous and deserted moor,
Sad, blooming in vain anxiety!
Always of life—the same strange ailment,
And the heart—the same open wound!
