Scenes from São Miguel Island

Good morning, everyone. I hope you are well. Yesterday, we had a day with some showers, and guess what... today the rain has returned with strength. It's also a gray day. Last weekend, we had a sunny day, so I went for a walk around Povoação, and I will share with you some photos from a viewpoint - Pico dos Bodes - in that municipality that is worth visiting. First, a brief overview of the municipality of Povoação.

The municipality of Povoação is located at the southeastern tip of São Miguel Island. It borders to the north with the municipalities of Nordeste and Ribeira Grande, to the west with the municipality of Vila Franca do Campo, and to the south with the Atlantic Ocean. It has a roughly rectangular shape, covering an area of about 110.3 km², which corresponds to 14.2% of the island's surface. In administrative terms, it consists of six parishes: Furnas, Ribeira Quente, Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, Faial da Terra, Água Retorta, and Povoação, with the latter being the municipal seat.

The municipality features a quite rugged orography, mainly composed of two large calderas: the Povoação Caldera, which forms a shell-shaped depression facing the sea, subjected to intense hydrological erosion, delimited by the watershed line passing through Pico da Vara, the highest point in the municipality and on the island (1,105 m); and the Furnas Caldera, a strongly attractive tourist destination due to both the lush nature of its vegetation and the secondary active volcanic phenomena, such as fumaroles and various mineral, thermal, and medicinal springs.

With regard to nature conservation, the municipality cover the Special Protection Area of Pico da Vara and Ribeira do Guilherme (Natura 2000 Network) and the Natural Forest Reserve of Pico da Vara. In this hilly landscape, where remnants of the natural flora of the Azores can be found, there survives an endemic bird classified as endangered, the "Priolo", once extremely abundant throughout São Miguel Island and now confined to a very small population. In terms of human occupation, it was in Povoação that the first Portuguese settlers who arrived on São Miguel Island established themselves, a fact that is at the origin of its toponymy.

This viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the southern slope of the Protected Area of Planalto dos Graminhais, as well as the southern coast of the island, with a highlight of the town of Povoação.

Thanks for stopping by :) I really appreciate the support :) Cheers :)

Your photographs once again remind us of the beauty of nature and its mysterious possibilities. I would also like to say about the beauty of the colors of the sky and mountains, this is a fabulous view. Your works are great. Thank you very much.

When it's sunny, the contrast of the green fields and the sky provides excellent images. Thank you for the kindness... all the best :) Cheers :)

HI Marco, the place where you live is absolutely gorgeous, pure nature, that I love. There where more people the nature will be contaminated.

I love that viewpoint must be very popular you can see everything around from such height.

São Miguel is increasingly sought after by tourists. Let's hope that in the future, we can successfully balance nature and its preservation with the growing number of visitors. This viewpoint is in a somewhat remote location, perhaps in the most secluded area of the island, hence the pristine images. It seems to me that it would have been a whale-watching spot. In the past, whaling was one of the main economic activities of the island... fortunately, that was in the past...Thanks for stopping by :) Cheers :)

These pictures are amazing @marcoteixeira.

Thank you for the kindness...and for stopping by:) All the best :) Cheers :)
