A beautiful hidden paradise that offers breathtaking scenery and a peaceful atmosphere. With its unique black sand beach and clear blue waters, this spot is a must-visit for anyone traveling to the Azores.
The beach is relatively small and secluded, making it the perfect spot for introspection and meditation. It is surrounded by cliffs and lush green vegetation, providing a stunning backdrop atmosphere. Does it invite for a swim? What do you think?
One of the best things about the Praia da Viola beach is that it is relatively unknown to tourists, meaning you can enjoy the the beauty of the beach without the crowds. However, this also means that the beach lacks the usual tourist amenities (if you really care about that kind of thing). Visitors are advised to bring their own food and drinks and to be prepared to spend the day in a more rustic setting.
In addition to its stunning beach, the Praia da Viola is also home to a beautiful walking trail that offers breathtaking views of the coastline. The trail winds along the cliffs above the beach, offering a bird's eye view of the water below. Hikers can explore the trail at their own pace and take in the stunning views along the way.
One of the highlights of the walking trail is the ruins of an watermill, located in an unlikely spot on the way down to the beach (I will share the photos in the next post). The ruin was likely built using volcanic rock, which is typical of the construction style on the island. Has fallen into disrepair and is now almost completely covered in vegetation, but it is still a beautiful sight to behold.
Overall, the Praia da Viola is a hidden gem that offers visitors a unique and peaceful experience on São Miguel Island. Whether you are looking to spend a day at the beach, hike along the coastline or explore the traditional architecture of the island, this spot is definitely worth a visit. A rustic experience to remember...Even the small wooden trunk in the midst of the breaking waves seemed to have something to tell! Hope you enjoy it!
