Today I share some photos of one of the most emblematic castles in Portugal. A castle that has present a set of stories and battles between two religions - the Christian and the Muslim!
The castle is located on a small island with the same name, in the middle of the Tejo River and in the town of Vila Nova da Barquinha. It is one of the highest exponents of Portuguese military architecture in the Middle Ages. Built in the 11th century, it is associated with the Christian reconquest of Portugal and the battles date back to the first king of Portugal.
I consider this one of the most beautiful castles I have visited in Portugal, as the landscape setting is amazing. The castle integrates that small hill and the whole block is one element. It is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations and we can visit it through a small boat crossing, very short, to a small access path to the main tower of the castle.
There is a legend involving this Castle. The story goes that the daughter of King D. Afonso Henriques, D. Teresa, fell in love with a Moorish knight, and together they planned to escape to live their forbidden love. However, D. Teresa's father discovered the plan and ordered the capture of the Moorish knight. Desperate, D. Teresa jumped from the ramparts of the castle and drowned in the Tejo River. It is said that the soul of D. Teresa still inhabits the castle, waiting for the forbidden love to return.
Hope you enjoy it!!!!
I am sharing photos of landscapes, moments and experiences. Nature and sea are the most visited themes in my photo collection, but any attention-grabbing aspect can be photographed. Hope you enjoy it...Location: Vila Nova da Barquinha - Portugal
