THE VOICE OF THE LINDEN TREE

The linden tree sings to me: "I am sincere,
I am what you see: the dream, the grace,
The wind gave my body, as it passes,
This sculptural air of a bayadere...
And in the morning, the sun is a crater,
A golden serpent that embraces me...
I carry in my hands the hands of Spring...
And it is for me that on nights of sorrow
The wind plays Mozart, sad and solemn,
And to my vibrant soul, laid bare,
The rain recites sonnets by Verlaine..."
And, seeing me sad, the linden tree murmured:
"I was once a poet like you...
One day you shall be a linden tree like me..."

NOT TO BE

How I wish to return to the innocence
Of raw, healthy, inanimate things,
To shed the vain pride, the incoherence:

Torn mantles of mutilated statues!
Ah! to tear from the lacerated flesh
Its miserable secret of conscience!
Ah! to be merely the blossoming
Of stars in pure, dazzling nights!
To be a nostalgic poplar at dusk,
With grave, placid, absorbed branches
In the magical task of living!
To be stem, sap, restless branches,
To lift to the sun the hearts of the dead
In the golden urn of an open flower!...
Who made the crimson bed for the toad
Of scattered roses in the evening?
And who dressed the swallow as a nun,
And perfumed the garden's shadows?
Who chiseled stars in the jasmine?
Who gave those queenly tresses
To the sunflower? Who made the sea? And my
Bleeding soul? Who created me?
