The fantastic arabesque of smoke
From my cigarette traces what you said,
In blue, in the air; and what you wrote to me,
And all that you dreamed and I presume.
For my static and aimless soul,
The memory of all that you gave me
Passes like the ship you lost,
In the fantastic arabesque of smoke...
There they go! There they go! Without sails and without masts,
They have the sparkling brilliance of stars,
Ghost ships, lost in the distance!
They come to fetch me, without masts and without sails,
Girl-bride, the crazy caravels,
To the unknown Country of my childhood...
