Halloween
The word Halloween comes from around the year 1745, however, its origin goes back many centuries before Christ, and comes from a Celtic tradition in which rituals were performed far away from the costume parties, pumpkins and games that we know today.
The ancient Celtic peoples celebrated a before and after in their calendar with a festival called Samhain, a term that in Gaelic means "the end of summer", thus, on the last day of October, and coinciding with the autumn solstice, the peasants celebrated the end of the season under the belief that during that precise night, October 31, the spirits walked among the living.
This celebration would arrive in the United States during the 19th century thanks to the emigrants who arrived in ships from Europe. A great part of them were Irish Catholics who left for new directions due to a great famine in their country of origin, bringing this celebration to the United States, continuing with the tradition of their ancestors.
La palabra Halloween procede de alrededor del año 1745, sin embargo, su origen se remonta muchos siglos atrás, antes de Cristo, y proviene de una tradición celta en la que se realizaban rituales muy alejados de las fiestas de disfraces, calabazas y juegos que en la actualidad conocemos.
Los antiguos pueblos celtas celebraban un antes y después en su calendario con una fiesta llamada Samhain, término que en gaélico significa "el final del verano", de esta forma, el último día del mes de octubre, y coincidiendo con el solsticio de otoño, los campesinos celebraban el fin de la temporada bajo la creencia de que durante esa precisa noche, la del 31 de octubre, los espíritus caminaban entre los vivos.
Esta celebración llegaría a los Estados Unidos durante el Siglo XIX gracias a los emigrantes que llegaban en barcos desde Europa. Una gran parte de ellos eran irlandeses católicos que partieron hacia nuevos rumbos a raíz de haberse desatado una gran hambruna en su país de origen, llevando a su nuevo hogar esta celebración, continuando con la tradición de sus ancestros.
