Sunflowers Fields Forever

The sunflower is a herbaceous plant native to Central and North America, although nowadays, it is cultivated in many parts of the world, among other reasons, for its nutritional, oleaginous and ornamental properties. In pre-Hispanic times, the sunflower represented the Sun God, particularly among the Aztecs and Incas.

Its name is due to a property known as "heliotropism", which allows the plant to rotate according to the position of the sun when it is still young. At maturity, the plant loses this property and remains in a fixed position, with the flower facing east.

A few years ago, during a brief trip through the western Venezuelan plains, I had the opportunity to observe a sunflower field that stretched as far as the eye could see, on the side of the "José Antonio Páez" highway, on the outskirts of the city of Araure, with a large number of people walking through it, so I decided to park my vehicle and take some photographs for my personal archive.

Campos de Girasoles Eternos

El girasol es una planta herbácea originaria de Centro y Norte de América, aunque hoy en día, se cultiva en muchas partes del mundo, entre otras razones, por sus propiedades alimenticias, oleaginosa y ornamental. En la época prehispánica, el girasol representaba al dios Sol, particularmente, entre los aztecas e incas.

Su nombre se debe a una propiedad conocida como "heliotropismo", que le permite a la planta girar según la posición del sol cuando aún es joven. En la madurez, la planta pierde esta propiedad y permanece en una posición fija, con la flor orientada al este.

Unos años atrás, durante un breve paseo por los llanos occidentales venezolanos, tuve la oportunidad de observar un sembradío de girasoles que se extendía hasta donde alcanzaba la vista, a un costado de la Autopista "José Antonio Páez", a las afueras de la ciudad de Araure, con un gran número de personas recorriéndolo, lo que decidí estacionar mi vehículo y tomar algunas fotografías para mi archivo personal.
