The World of XPILAR - CITYSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY AND ART CONTEST Week #104 - Metropolitan Cathedral of Barquisimeto
"Architecture is the learned game, correct and magnificent, of forms assembled in the light."

Metropolitan Cathedral of Barquisimeto
The Metropolitan Cathedral of Barquisimeto or Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, is a catholic temple located in the central area of the city, more specifically on Venezuela Avenue between 29th and 30th Streets.
Designed by architect Jahn Bergkamp, its construction began in 1953 with the purpose of replacing the old cathedral, the St. Francis of Assisi Church, which had suffered damages as a consequence of the 1950 earthquake in the neighboring town of El Tocuyo, being inaugurated 15 years later, in 1968.
This modern building is characterized by its hyperbolic paraboloid shape, similar to "a flower with four petals" upside down. Its roof is formed by acrylic panels supported by a network of ribs made of post-tensioned steel cables covered with concrete, which allows it to have natural lighting, in addition, its architectural distribution facilitates an adequate ventilation of all its internal spaces.
