St. Joseph Cathedral
The St. Joseph Cathedral is the name given to a religious temple that belongs to the Catholic Church and is located in the historic area of Puerto Cabello, a port city located in the central region of Venezuela.
For its construction the coral stones of the area were used, and before being a Catholic temple, the land where it is located, had different uses as a salt deposit and as a stable. Later, it would become a barracks, which was demolished to make way for the construction of the temple.
The work began in 1852, and then stopped in 1892 due to lack of resources, resuming in 1938 and finally being inaugurated in 1943. The bell tower was not part of the original design and was added in 1957.
It is currently the seat of the Diocese of Puerto Cabello (Dioecesis Portus Cabellensis) and serves as the city's cathedral.
La Catedral de San José es el nombre que recibe un templo religioso que pertenece a la Iglesia católica y que se encuentra en la zona histórica de Puerto Cabello, una ciudad portuaria ubicada en la región central de Venezuela.
Para su construcción se utilizaron las piedras coralinas de la zona, y antes de ser un templo católico, el terreno donde se encuentra ubicado, tuvo diferentes usos como depósito de sal y como establo. Posteriormente, pasaría a ser un cuartel, el cual fué derribado para dar paso a la edificación del templo.
Los trabajos se iniciaron en el año 1852, y luego se paralizan en 1892 por falta de recursos, reanudándose en 1938 y siendo inaugurado finalmente en 1943. El campanario no formaba parte del diseño original, agregándose en 1957.
En la actualidad es la sede de la Diócesis de Puerto Cabello (Dioecesis Portus Cabellensis) y funciona como catedral de la ciudad.
