The World of XPILAR - CITYSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY AND ART CONTEST WEEK #042 - The Eagle [ENG/ESP]

“Freedom, Sancho, is one of the most precious gifts that heaven gave men; the treasures that the land and the sea hold cannot be equaled with it: for freedom, as well as for honor, one can and must venture life.”

Miguel de Cervantes

The Eagle

This commemorative monument is located in front of the old warehouse of the Casa Guipuzcoana (Guipuzcoana House) in Puerto Cabello, a port city on the Venezuelan north-central coast. It is made of granite and bronze, and would be known initially as Column to the Americans and later as Plaza del Aguila (Eagle Square), a name that it still preserves today.

It was erected in 1896 during the government of the President Joaquín Crespo, to honor the memory of the ten American citizens who would be executed by the Spanish troops, after their capture in the nearby town of Ocumare de la Costa, when they accompanied the Venezuelan hero Francisco de Miranda in a failed attempt to land on Venezuelan lands in 1806, in an event that would initiate the Latin American independence exploits.

The bird that crowns the monument with its wings spread as a symbol of freedom, unlike popular belief, actually corresponds to a condor and not an eagle, an animal that represents the people of the United States of America. Its authorship is awarded to the French sculptor Enmanuel Frémiet, and its elaboration would be in charge of the company Thiébaut Fréres based in Paris.

I took the photograph a few years ago, and as I have previously described in previous publications, I modified the original image using the PicsArt application.
