Tradescantia pallida - Purple Heart

Tradescantia pallida, also known, among other names, as purple secretia, purple-heart and purple queen, is a herbaceous perennial plant species native to eastern Mexico, from Tamaulipas to the Yucatan Peninsula.
With elongated and pointed leaves, measuring between 7 to 15 cms. long, this plant has small flowers of 3 white, pink or purple petals, with yellow stamens. The leaves often have a purplish hue. It thrives in full light or part shade in subtropical areas, and grows to 20 to 40 cm tall.
In many areas, this species has escaped from cultivation in the southern United States to South America, and warm parts of the former British colonies, including Australia. In some regions it is considered a weed.
It is also an ornamental plant in gardens, borders, ground cover, or (particularly in cold places) as a houseplant. It is easily propagated by cutting; stems are conspicuously segmented and roots often grow in crevices. It is fast growing, disease resistant and shade tolerant.
As it is non-toxic it is generally considered safe for human consumption and also as fodder for cattle and swine feed. However, it should be noted that the plant is rich in raphidia, oxalate and calcium crystals, which damage intestinal walls and can cause kidney stone problems.
