WOX TRAVEL CONTEST | WEEK 2 / Estepona: Timeless Beauty
In the south of Spain lies the resort area of Costa del Sol, drawing tourists from across the globe. Estepona really catches my eye amidst Spain's multitude of resorts: it's got this cozy, laid-back vibe, not as jam-packed as some of the big-name destinations.
Wander into its historic heart, and you're stepping into a quintessential Andalusian scene – think whitewashed houses, roofs topped with fiery red tiles, and narrow, winding streets that exude a peaceful charm. It's even earned the nickname "Garden of the Costa del Sol" (Jardín de la Costa del Sol) because of all the flower pots and plants dotting the area, from lively pink bougainvillea to delicate begonias.
To the east of the central beach lies the old town. Here, everything is preserved as it was in the past, as if it came out of a postcard. White low houses, each facade adorned with flowerpots, mainly begonias, small cobblestone streets where houses touch each other, silence, tranquility...
Every street has houses with different but the same color flowerpots - a street with red flowerpots, a street with blue flowerpots... And this is because the residents of the city themselves have decided to diversify and add this beautiful element to their city.
In the middle of the pedestrian streets, there are waterfalls of flowers. Establishments inviting you to enjoy a cold beer or sangria. And paella, which here is only made from seafood.
If you have a passion for Spanish literature, you'll discover another reason to cherish Estepona's historic center. Here, you'll encounter poems by celebrated Spanish writers like Luis de Góngora and Rafael Alberti. Spread throughout the old town, there are over 40 poems waiting for you to explore. Some of these poems are dedicated specifically to the town.
The bus station is located outside the old town, so if you're coming from Malaga or any other beach town, remember that you'll need to head towards the historic center. I personally took the bus and then strolled to the town from the bus station, as it's a pleasant and short walk (about 20 minutes). Along the way, you can enjoy the seafront view.
So If you're in Malaga or the surrounding areas, don't miss seeing Estepona - it's worth every minute!
Enjoy!
So beautiful place 🤩
