WOX TRAVEL CONTEST | WEEK 1 Vearno Azul - Nerja
Looking for your next destination in Spain but not sure where to go? Let me suggest a quaint little spot... You probably guessed it from the title - it's Nerja, a charming resort town situated approximately 60 kilometers from Malaga. One absolute must-see while in Nerja is the Balcony of Europe.
This lively terrace is predisposed to breathtaking views. After an earthquake in 1884 destroyed the local village, King Alfonso XII decided to visit. Seeing the cliff overlooking the sea, where an Arab fortress once stood, he exclaimed, "This is the balcony of Europe." Since then, the name of this unique natural platform offering views to some of the best beaches in Malaga has stuck, where visitors soak up the Andalusian sun.
The balcony offers a view of the city's two beaches. They are quite small, and if you want to visit them during peak season, keep in mind that you should arrive early to choose the best spot since they tend to get crowded.
After enjoying the amazing views from the Balcony of Europe, walk around the old town's narrow streets. You'll find lots of cool shops and cozy places to eat tapas.
A relaxed walk through the town exudes a cozy ambiance, ideal for immersing yourself in the local atmosphere. The buildings are white, and the different colors of the doors and flowers add a lot of mood and romance. Ideal for couples, who will surely feel even more in love.
If you're into art, you can visit the city gallery, which is free for visitors. The exhibition I saw was of paintings and sculptures related to music.
Following in the footsteps of the sailor Chanquete.
Nerja is also the backdrop for one of Spain's most iconic children's series - "Blue Summer" - Verano Azul. Every Spaniard, when asked, would say they've heard of it. The series recounts the summer adventures of a group of children in Nerja, consisting of five boys and two girls, aged between eight and seventeen, along with two adults: an artist and a retired sailor.
Each character becomes a favorite among millions of children worldwide, as the series has been broadcast not only in Spain but also in Latin America, Portugal, Angola, Bulgaria, Croatia, Poland, and Serbia. In Bulgaria, it has been aired several times. If you're a fan of Kike, Pancho, Javi, Piranha, Tito, Julia, and Chanquete, and want to follow in their footsteps, this is the place for you.

In Nerja, you can stroll around all day without rushing, and I assure you that you'll see everything.
Charming Nerja awaits you. Enjoy
