Photo of the week #40 | The square/plaza - Plaza Mayor
Villa de Leyva is a small town located in the Department of Boyacá, Colombia and it is very touristy. Its square, almost the only one, La Plaza Mayor, is where all the shows in town are given.
Of course, the pigeons could not be absent, they are a classic that cannot be missed. Giving food to pigeons is a must. Seeing them come to look for food and then scare them away to see them all fly in herd is a classic.
Every Saturday it is filled with awnings and trucks of marchers who come to sell their merchandise, you get everything there. Fresh fruits and vegetables brought by farmers, used and new shoes, clothes, etc.
You arrive very early to choose the best and get good deals. Go through the entire market to see the variety of items they offer and then finish in the part where cooked food is sold, tasty soups, arepas, grilled meats, and everything that the gastronomy of the place offers.
There is only one church, but it is large and with a lot of capacity, since it is where everyone wants to get married, baptize and take photos. Every Sunday you can see a social activity inside and outside of it. In front of the church in the month of December, there is a large platform to welcome the new year every December 31, with orchestras, fireworks and the church bells ring out at 12.
This square is emblematic and well known in Colombia. The locals meet every week to share and go for a walk.

Villa de Leyva es un pequeño pueblo ubicado en el Departamento de Boyacá, Colombia y es muy turístico. Su plaza, casi que la única, La Plaza Mayor, es donde se dan todos los espectáculos que hay en el pueblo.
Por supuesto, no podían faltar las palomas, son un clásico que no se puede dejar pasar. Darle comida a las palomas es una actividad obligada. Verlas venir a buscar comida y luego espantarlas para verlas volar a todas en manada es un clásico.
Todos los Sábados se llena de toldos y camiones de personas marchantes que llegan a vender su mercancía, consigues de todo allí. Frutas y verduras frescas que traen los agricultores, zapatos usados y nuevos, ropa, etc.
Se llega muy temprano para escoger lo mejor y obtener buenas ofertas. Recorrer todo el mercado para ver la variedad de artículos que ofrecen y luego terminar en la parte donde se vende comida hecha, sabrosas sopas, arepas, carnes asadas, y todo lo que la gastronomía del lugar ofrece.
Hay una única iglesia, pero es grande y con mucha capacidad, ya que es donde todos se quieren casar, bautizar y tomarse fotos. Todos los Domingos puedes ver una actividad social dentro y fuera de ella. Frente a la iglesia en el mes de Diciembre, se dispone de una tarima grande para recibir el año nuevo cada 31 de Diciembre, con orquestas, fuegos artificiales y las campanas de la iglesia resuenan a las 12.
Esta plaza es emblemática y muy conocida en Colombia. Los lugareños se dan cita cada semana para compartir y salir a caminar un rato.
