Writing competition 124 / The last penguins / I promise myself I will never hunt them
The orca cub approached the ice floes and saw some penguins for the first time. He had never seen those plump dark birds and he didn't know if they were food or not. Until now his parents had taught him to eat fish, squid and seal meat. He still didn't know how to hunt.
He noticed that there were young penguins like him, playful and curious, restless, with whom he swam and did some pirouettes under the ice blocks, while from a distance, about 50 meters from there, the signals (infrasound) came constantly: the voices of their parents: “Is everything okay? Is there nothing weird around there?" And he answered them: “Everything is fine. Do not worry".
Suddenly, in about three minutes, the cub's parents approached where he was and he was surprised by the reaction of the penguins, because they all ran terrified and climbed on the ice. In that he realized that those birds were also part of the diet of the killer whales, and in his own way he felt sorry that those newly known friends once had to be swallowed by both his parents and himself.
"Let's go, son. We have to travel to a distant sea," his parents told him. The cub perched his head over the edge of the ice and looked into the eyes of his little friends and thought: "I promise myself I will never hunt them." He turned around and started the journey with his parents.
