Writing competition 131: The Unknown Fort

A group of travelers was going into the heart of the Amazon. At one point, having come out of a dense vegetation, they found themselves facing a small lake with buildings in the center.

The complex consisted of many towers with a pointed roof and made entirely of wood, rotted in some places.

They asked an old man who lived there for information and he told the story:

“When I was very little my father used to tell me about the fort. This was a peaceful place, where only farmers dwelled, but their tranquility was shattered by a raid from a hostile clan, and they had to erect a fortification to protect themselves. It started as a simple palisade with two watchtowers.

After, the enemy clan faced a devastating invasion from a foreign power and the rest of the clan was welcomed by ours inside the fort. They had better knowledge of construction and undertook to build many more towers and stronger than ours, also they were better warriors and taught us to defend ourselves.

At the next attack the fort managed to hold the fight, and while men and women repulsed the enemies, the children and the elderly were safe inside the towers. This fort allowed our people to survive.

However, many years later, they decided to dam and flood this whole area. The fort, along with the rest of the village disappeared under the water.

Now the drought has brought it back to light and we can really see it, now I'm sure it wasn't a legend and the few old people like me who live here can continue to tell the story of our ancestors."
