A LUXURIOUS VILLA ON THE LAKE - Grotte di Catullo
Dear Steemians,
On Lake Garda, which divides the regions of Lombardy and Veneto, there is a peninsula on the south side, which, narrowly narrow, seems to cut the lake in two, which ends up in an island, linked to the peninsula only by a drawbridge. I'm talking about Sirmione. A place very dear to me, as I was there in the first years of my life, but for me only memories remain in the photographs. After more than 30 years I have returned.
As usual I want to talk to you about a wonderful place, but I will start from the less commercial, less fashionable, less visited area.
On the north side of the peninsula there is an archaeological area where you can visit the ruins of one of the largest Italian residential villas. The ruins were called Grotte di Catullo, Latin poet who in his works tells the beauty of this peninsula.
The rectangular-shaped villa with huge gardens with mainly Mediterranean vegetation is divided into areas.
Paths and flower beds divide and join the villa. Some buildings are still intact, and marvel at the size and perfection of the buildings.
Within the walls it is possible to exploit games of incredible lights and shadows, I can't imagine how beautiful it was at the height of its splendor.
Its staircases quickly lead from the height on which the villa rises to the lake, a bit like the stairways on the Amalfi Coast that lead to its wonderful sea.
The historic olive grove conveys a lot of freedom thanks to its size, relaxation. The position of the olive trees does not show the end of the garden, which seems infinite.
Inside the park of the caves, there is also an archaeological museum from the Roman era, where we find frescoes, tools of the time, coins etc ..
I recommend this corner of history ...
