Landscape photography – The desert meets the ocean (#steemexclusive / 11 photos)

A couple of years ago I was Namibia - a country with one of the oldest deserts in the world. The Namib Desert is also one of the hottest and has some of the highest sand dunes in the world. Namibia is also known for its national parks like Etosha with an abundance of wildlife and Fish River Canyon, which is the largest canyon in Africa.

In the small town of Swakopmund I had the opportunity to see both the town and the landscape from the air. When I look at the pictures afterwards, it almost looks like works of art! The sand dunes form undulating patterns. The blue sea that meets the desert provides great contrast in color. The salt extractions out in the sea look like checkered patterns when seen from above. An almost two hour flight in a small 6 person propeller plane took us on a flight around Swakopmund. It was a bit cramped and not possible to move very much. The windows were not completely clean and also had some scratches that became clear in some of the pictures. This is a small selection.

Swakopmund is situated with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Namib desert on the other. It's a pleasant town, founded in 1892, when Namibia was a German colony named German South-West Africa. It became the main harbour during this period. There is enough to do for a couple of days, but this town is also a good starting point for going north exploring the Skeleton Coast and getting deeper into the Namib Desert.

A shipwrech just north of Swakopmund

The coast is in many places treacherous. It's often foggy and the shore is filled with both sand and rocks. Because of that, many ships have run aground here over the years. The coast has become a burial ground filled with shipwrecks. Just outside Swakopmund we did see some of them, but it is the coast in the northern part of the country towards the border with Angola which is the actual Skeleton Coast.

Hehehe... sounds scary, but the skeletons are only ships...but of course there must have been men on board....

That might be a real adventure, like in Indiana Jones. Beautiful nature :)

Thank you :) I didn't actually think of Indiana Jones... It is like another world, at least to me. I really enjoyed everything in Namibia. The landscape, the friendly people, wildlife, the German influenced food...
