Our planet has such diverse landscapes from tropical rainforest to dry deserts, mountains, forrests, coral reefs... Each destination is unique. My travels have taken me to Namibia, that has some of the highest sandunes in the world. The island of La Reunion that has one of the worlds most active volcanoes and the Himalayas with the highest mountain in the world etc. But visiting Greenland was like visiting another world. The Greenland Ice Sheet and active glaciers producing tons of ice was an amazing sight. I was facinated by the size and form of the icebergs. The sound of ice calving into Kangia Icefjord was quite a dramatic experience.

Kangia Icefjord in the background

This is a selection of photos of icebergs taken on walks and boattrips in the area arround Ilulissat, which is the 3rd largest town on the island. It's situated on the west coast in the Disko Bay. The photos are taken at different times of the day. Because of the midnight sun there were hardly any change in light between day and night. The photo above is the mouth of Kangia Icefjord. Look at the house to the left and you can see how tall the ice is.

The photos above were taken on a walk from Ilulissat to Kangia Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The glacier Sermeq Kujalleq is one of the most active glaciers in the world and the largest on the northern hemisphere. This fjord that is filled with enormous, fast-moving icebergs from the glacier, is 5 km. wide and 1100 m. thick. It actually flows up to 20 meters per day and produces 20 million tons of ice per day!

Midnight boattrip

This was taken on a boat trip around midnight to the mouth of Kangia Icefjord. The area is filled with large icebergs. It is difficult to see the size since there is nothing to compare with, but if you notice the bird at the top of the picture you might get an idea.

All the photos above were taken during the daytime from the boat that took me to the Disko island. The light is different and the icebergs become smaller as we get further away from the mainland and Kangia, but it is still

The return trip from Disko to Ilulissat was late afternoon. The last hour the sun was slighty lower. It was sunny, sea surface completely calm all the way until arrival just before midnight.

Greenland's fjords filled with icebergs is an amazing sight and along with it comes the sounds of the cracking ice moving towards the sea. An absolute spectacular experience.

That is first time I am able to see Icebergs so close. For tourists must be real adventure, I can imagine how it was dangerous in old time for people living there, among those Icebergs. But you have managed to capture the beauty of the nature. The colors are absolutely amazing :)

Thank you :) It was the first time I saw icebergs as big as a 6 story building and so many! I never got tired of sitting on deck looking at them. It was cold. Even in July we had to dress up warmly. But the beauty of the arctic is so amazing.

Thank you :) It's a facinating place and I should like to go back again. It's a huge country / island ( the biggest in the world) and I only saw a very small part....
