Waiting for a "Right Time" That Will Never Come

in WORLD OF XPILAR4 months ago

We humans can be a funny bunch!

We often go to great lengths to determine exactly what it is we want in life — little things and large things — and once we've done that, surprisingly many of us develop an assortment of reasons to not pursue that particular thing. Or person. At least not now.

I mean, we still want them, but just "not right now..."

Many of these reasons are rather on the silly side... and goodness knows I've used some of them, myself.

In particular, there's the "I just need to wait for the right time" excuse.

What does that even mean?

And what does "the right time" actually look like? Does it ever apply, in a truthful and tangible way?

Yes, I realize there are examples... like "I need to wait for the right time to plant tomatoes," that genuinely apply... but they tend to be fewer than the "excuses," and particularly as they apply to things that have no "season."

If Not Now, Then WHEN...?

  • I need a new job!
  • I'm going to take up painting!
  • I need to get in shape!
  • I want to be in a GREAT relationship!
  • I want to go to New Zealand!
  • I'm going to stop eating junk food!
  • I want to find the love of my life!
  • I'm going to start meditating!
  • I need to get organized!

I imagine at least one of these things have crossed your sense of awareness, at some time in your life, if not during recent years.

Did you get started right away?

Or — phrased a little differently — how many "important things" have you decided to do, that actually took you a very long time to get around to... and that might even still be on your to-do list, "when the right time comes?"

It's only "too late" if you don't start now...

I remember coming across the above truism many years ago. As I recall, they came from a financial advisor, replying to someone at a seminar who wanted to know whether it was "too late" for them to start a retirement plan.

But it can really be applied to many situations, can't it?

So why do we postpone even things we really want? Do we not actually want them?

Usually, a couple of things can be at play. One is that these things(dreams) are SO important to us that we don't dare go after them until the moment when we feel the very most capable of getting them. So if we feel like anything at all might get in the way or make us fall short... then we postpone until "the right time."

I suppose it's really a fear-based response... we feel terrified of setting our hearts on something amazing and then failing to get it. And I can appreciate that sentiment.

But sometimes there's a darker issue at hand... that of worthiness.

I remember a couple of decades back when my somewhat nerdy friend Jon was looking at dating websites, and he would spend hours and days looking at women's profiles, making notes and taking the whole process of finding someone compatible VERY seriously.

But then — when push cam to shove — he would not make contact with his top choices, but instead with those who were "kinda OK" instead. He insisted that "the right time" would come for him to date someone perfect. In the meantime...

... needless to say, Jon didn't find happiness that way... and didn't until he worked out some personal issues relating to worthiness that had little to do with his dating choices.

Jon's efforts were, of course, also a fear-based response. He had to learn that it was OK for him to be happy, before he was fit to find a good relationship.

So be careful/mindful when you find yourself looking longingly at something you really wish for... and then declare that you're "waiting for the right time" to take it on!

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great rest of your week!

How about you? Have you ever felt like you needed to wait "for the right time" to start something you really wanted? If so, did that "right time" ever come? Or are you still waiting? Why do you think this happens? Leave a comment if you feel so inclined — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!
