Tik-Tok Cooking Videos: It's Not Everything it's Cracked Up to Be!

in WORLD OF XPILAR3 years ago

I'll be the first to admit that tik-tok cooking videos can certainly be inspiring and entertaining but experience has taught me that most of the time they're basically useless and fairly misleading.

That might sound like sacrilege or even an insult to some... but stay with me, just for a few moments!

So you take all these ingredients and you blend them together like this and like that and then you put them in the oven in this specific temperature after this fashion and... screeeeeech!

Let's not forget the approximately 45 minutes of chopping and washing and preparing and getting stuff ready that goes into this project before you even start doing whatever you're showing us in your little video!

We now resume our program already in progress...

So you put all your ingredients into this dish, and then in the oven at 400 degrees for 15 minutes and then this, that and the other is all crispy and pretty and…. screeeech!

Well, actually you put them in the oven at 400 degrees for something like 15 minutes plus 5 minutes plus 5 minutes plus 4 minutes plus 3 minutes plus 5 more minutes before you actually get to the end result pictured in the video.

Then you add the cheese and the extra condiments into this and then brush on the barbecue sauce and put it all back in the oven under the broiler for about 3 minutes… scrreeeeeech!

Well, actually after three minutes your dish looks absolutely no different from how it looked when you first put it under the broiler, so you put it back in and leave it in for another 5 minutes at which point they are not actually that pretty golden brown but blackened

... because nobody actually cared to mention that the sugar in the recommended BBQ sauce turns from stone cold to a smoky burned mess in a matter of five and a half seconds when it's under the broiler. So you scrape of the burned bits to the best of your ability, add fresh sauce and watch the whole thing like a nervous mother hen... because there's no way you could possibly "watch an episode of your favorite sitcom while it cooks!"

Annoying as this might all sound, there are still some great ideas out there... and I find a good bit of cooking inspiration from them.

Just don't take it all too literally!

Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend!
