Risky Business...

in WORLD OF XPILAR5 days ago

With a few exceptions, I have typically preferred — and chosen — a fairly quiet life.

This held true even when I was in my teens and into young adulthood, and more than a few friends (at the time) would rib me for "acting old" because I wasn't into a lot of risky endeavors.

Fair enough.

I was never into bungee jumping, handling deadly snakes, jumping out of perfectly airplanes, juggling knives or parkour on top of skyscrapers. I'm also not into gambling, nor do I have the slightest interest in exotic recreational drugs and hallucinogenics.

But what is "risk," really?

As the years have quietly scrolled by, I have really come to see how risky things are very much in the eye of the beholder.

This is seldom more evident than when aforesaid people who jump out of airplanes shake their collective heads when I tell them that I have started better than a dozen businesses and haven't held a "real" job since about 1997.

Of course, they'd likely also find it "too risky" to be involved in the Cryptosphere, the way I am.

Evidently, there are also many who think I take amazing emotional and psychological risks by being very open and transparent about myself, my life and how I feel about it.

Being somewhat of a career student of psychology, the latter is perhaps the most baffling to me. If you aren't willing to be completely transparent and open about who you are, how can you honestly expect to form deep intimate connections with anyone?

Of course, lot of people don't. As I have noted previously, many people are most comfortable swimming around in the "shallows" of life.

It all goes to show how we tend to have different "comfort zones" in life... and I have often found that perhaps the most powerful indicator of whether two people get on relates to whether or not they have compatible comfort zones.

That's often how we end up wanting to "do stuff together."

But — to bring the bunny back around — what is this thing called "risk," really? Do we even understand what our own interpretation of risk is... and is it objective, or purely subjective?

Not claiming to have the answers here... just opening up for the possibility of examination and reflection. Because it would be risky not to.

Wouldn't it?

And with that thought, I'm going to get back to my very UN-risky life and weekend!

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great weekend, yourself!
