On Gardening, Aging... and "Overdoing It!"

in WORLD OF XPILAR2 years ago

I love being outside and I love working in the garden; when spring finally arrives there's always lots to be done, out there.

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, we are finally having some nice weather, so outside we went!

This is the point at which I have to admit that "I'm not 29, anymore!"

Meaning that I rather overdid it yesterday, and my back is hurting enough that there was very little gardening for me today, in spite of another fabulous day.

Of course, I'm a bit out of shape, since the winter has kept us from much activity... and pulling weeds and digging in soil uses muscles that have little do to with conventional fitness training. That said, I came face-to-face with my age!

No biggie, of course, I'll be fine again in a couple of days.

For a moment, I found myself thinking back to my elderly auntie who helped raise me, back in Denmark... and how she would describe "the signs of getting older," from time to time.

Of course, I was a strapping teenager at the time, so the idea of your body not immediately bouncing back from hard work was almost alien to me... but I nonetheless remembered her talking about it.

And now I well appreciate how a long day in the vegetable garden typically meant that she spent the next day mostly reading a book in a comfortable chair!

Not going to complain too much, mind you... there was no shortage of paperwork-ish things for me to do inside the house, today!

Thanks for reading, and I hope the rest of your weekend is a good one!

Yesss... The hikes become shorter every year and the stairway to the fifth floor feels like climbing a skyscraper...;-))

Yes, I sadly know that feeling! I suppose the secret here is to learn to age gracefully, as did my aunt who lived to 94.
