Moments of Nostalgia: Thinking Back on Favorite Christmases Past

in WORLD OF XPILAR3 years ago

The holiday season is in full swing. As Mrs. Denmarkguy and I were putting up more decorations today, taking some of the old ornaments out of their boxes made my mind wander back to Christmases of the past; Christmases is of my childhood.

As a kid, I remember always hoping that it would snow for Christmas. However — contrary to popular belief — even though Denmark is a really long way north, white Christmases were quite rare. As I recall, we only actually had white Christmas once, when I was about 9 or 10.

Well, that's not entirely true. We did spend one Christmas in Switzerland, in the mountains, and that was definitely a white Christmas!

Probably my favorite Christmas happened when I was 12. My parents were divorced at that point, and I lived with my mother in an old Danish farmhouse with a thatched roof that was built in the 1750s as I recall. Having grown up in a very modern house, the whole idea of having a traditional Christmas in such a traditional setting left quite an impression on me.

That also turned out to be our last Christmas in Denmark, before we moved to the South of Spain during the summer of the following year. I never quite got used to Christmas in hot weather, particularly the idea of plastic Christmas trees!

Another favorite Christmas happened while I was still living in Texas. I was in my mid 30s, and it was my first Christmas after my ex and I had split. My friend Diana decided to put on what she liked to call an ”orphan Christmas,” which basically meant that she invited everybody she knew who had no family locally well we're single and had no place to go. Everybody made and brought one traditional Christmas dish from their region or country, that meant something special to them. Even though it was a motley crew of unlikely people gathered together, we really had the best time imaginable!

This year will be a very quiet Christmas around here. In fact, we learned earlier today then it will just be us and one other couple who are close friends. Our kids — adult, we live in nearby Seattle — will be staying at home this year because their biological father is visiting from California. We actually don't mind too much, because we've been feeling sort of reclusive this year.

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend!

How about YOU? Do you have particular favorite Christmases you remember? What sort of celebration will you have this year? Do leave a comment — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!

Hi @denmarkguy, it was interesting to hear the story from your side about the Christmas experience. As children it is like a magic and those memories remain the most precious for the whole life. I agree white Christmas has something special and I agree I can't imagine celebrating Christmas when it is hot around, feels like fake Christmas.

I hope you still will have lovely time and perhaps get together with your children via Skype :)
