Late Night Musings: What Gives Our Lives Deeper Meaning?

People dedicate their lives to all sorts of things.

Some are on quests for ”happiness;” others are looking for ”success;” some want ”power” because they feel like they want to rule the world; some want to find ”excitement;” the possibilities are many and varied.

But all of these are — ultimately — reflections of the search for something to give our lives meaning. Or perhaps deeper meaning.

The quest for meaning seems to be a life-long endeavor. It certainly has been, for me. Maybe it isn’t for everyone; maybe there are people out there for whom life does have perfect meaning. Maybe there are people who don’t really care, and I suppose that’s OK, too.

It’s past one o’clock in the morning, local time, and I am up and typing away… in the realization that ”writing out my thoughts” has been one of the things that gives my life meaning, and has been since I was a pretty young boy.

There are lots of different things I have engaged in over the years. Some of these activities have lasted a few months; some perhaps a decade or longer. But when I think about it, it is writing my thoughts that has stuck with me since I made my first few tenuous journal entries when I was maybe 11-12 years old.

I could say the same thing about nature photography, but where as I enjoy being out and about with my camera, I wouldn’t go as far as to call it a life-long passion.

One of the things many people describe as being a life-long endeavor is that of ”being of service.” That’s an interesting — and important — one for me. I definitely feel that it matters to dedicate part of your life to being ”of service” to others and to the world… but is it really a passion? Or do I simply attempt to do right because I feel it’s the right way to conduct myself?

On reflection, I would have to say that Mrs. Denmarkguy is far more passionate about being of service than I am — she’s a counselor and spiritual teacher, and has run her own charitable organization for almost 20 years. It really gives her life meaning in a way that’s much deeper than it is for me.
