Blogging: The Nice Things About "Evergreen" Content

in WORLD OF XPILAR3 years ago

As a longtime blogger, one of the concepts that has always been near and dear to my heart is that of "evergreen" content.

Regardless of where you are publishing your content, it's always important to pause and honestly answer the question "How will I get the most out of my writing?"

Few of us like to work hard, only to end up feeling like our efforts pretty much amounted to nothing.

Here on Steemit, there have been many many discussions about the importance (or lack of) of "quality content." Whatever your personal opinion might be, it's worth remembering that the major search engines —led by Google — are configured to try to create an overall positive experience for web users.

Sure, you might argue that they are just trying to sell advertising, but if the search results annoy people it ultimately means less advertising revenue and so there tends to be a bias towards QUALITY and an important aspect of quality content — especially the kind that will keep getting traffic over a long period of time — is to keep it "evergreen."

Now you might be thinking "but we only get rewards for seven days!" but keep in mind that search engines don't care whether or not you are getting paid... they care about serving up good and relevant search results.

Most of us know what "evergreen" means in the context of trees and plants, but what does it mean, in terms of web content?

The basic idea is to create something that is always useful, and tends to remain current, as time passes. Sure, "news" items may get a lot of initial attention when they are first posted, but they quickly grow stale. Think about it: Who's going to read about a supposedly "current" event that happened several months or even years ago?

Good examples of "evergreen" content would be advice columns, or "how to" tutorials, or descriptive accounts of vacation venues, or product reviews. Personal essays and travel accounts are also nice examples of evergreen content.

It takes time and patience to build an online following — I should know(!) — and the best way you can help yourself in that regard is to give people something of enough quality that they come away feeling like their bothering to click on your article was worthwhile.

Thanks for reading, and have a great remainder of your weekend!

How about YOU? Do you focus on a particular type of content? Do you ever consider that people are going to find your Steemit posts LONG AFTER they have paid out? What sort of impression do you want to leave them with? Do leave a comment — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!

I really like the thumbnail photo and I enjoyed reading the post @denmarkguy! I totally agree that we should all aim at creating “evergreen” content and that’s exactly what I’m trying to💁‍♀️I like that you gave examples of “evergreen” content. I find these quite useful.

Thanks for the kind words @petface, I appreciate it!

I really have no hard and fast rules about content other than wanting to be able to look at it next month or next year and "be OK" with saying that I created it.

Thank you for the support, as always! I really appreciate it!

I totally agree. The quality of the content is important. For short moments, however, it is also okay if light fare is on offer. And by the way, nice photos.

Thank you. I have no problem with short content, as long as it adds something of value. A photo, a poem, a quick observation. It's the 132,673rd version of the same meme we have already seen that gets on my nerves!
