Architectural Photography Contest. Smolny Cathedral

Oddly enough, my favourite view of the Smolny Cathedral is not from the façade or the courtyard, but from the Smolny Institute. It would probably be wrong to call it a view of the cathedral at all; from this perspective much of the building is blocked off by other buildings.

To approach the entrance to the church you have to walk around the long fence. The fence also looks very picturesque to me, and I continue to admire the beautiful view along the way.

Чтобы подойти ко входу в церковь, надо обойти вокруг длинного забора. Забор тоже кажется мне очень живописным, и я продолжаю любоваться красивым видом по дороге.

Eventually, after walking along the fence and around the service building, I reach the courtyard in front of the cathedral entrance. This is the culmination of my walk.

The construction of the cathedral was started in 1748 by the architect B. Rastrelli. In addition to the cathedral there were plans to build a high bell tower, but due to funding cuts the project was not realized. The bell tower was never built, it exists only as a model. The construction and finishing of the interiors of the cathedral was not completed until 1835. If you mentally subtract the start date from the completion date and get a figure that seems excessive to you - you are not mistaken, you have calculated everything correctly.

Строительство собора было начато в 1748 году по проекту архитектора Б. Растрелли. Кроме собора планировалось построить высокую колокольню, но из-за сокращения финансирования проект не был реализован. Колокольня так и не была построена, она существует только в виде макета. Строительство и отделка интерьеров собор был закончена только в 1835 году. Если вы мысленно вычитаете дату начала работ из даты окончания строительства и получаете цифру, которая кажется вам чрезмерной - вы не ошиблись, вы всё посчитали правильно.
