WOX TRAVEL CONTEST| WEEK 4 | A Trip To Avebury

Hello. My wife and I visited Avebury. It is a very interesting location. Avebury contains the largest megalithic stone circle in the world. Most people choose to visit Stonehenge, but I prefer Avebury as you can walk among the stones and touch them.

Avebury and its surroundings are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with Stonehenge, which is about 18 miles away. The stone circle at Avebury was built between 2850 BC and 2200 BC, but its original meaning and function are still unknown.

Next, we visited the Red Lion Pub which is at the centre of Avebury. It has a thatched roof and inside you can see the well. The well has been made into a table with a glass top so you can peer inside and look down the well. The pub dates back to 1802 and is said to be one of the most haunted pubs in Britain.

Near the stone circle at Avebury, you can find these amazing trees that have the most fascinating roots. Some people say these trees inspired JRR Tolkien to create the Ents.

The National Trust Museum at Avebury is housed in two buildings: the Stables Gallery and the Barn Gallery. The Stables Gallery is a 17th-century building that was originally used as a stable for the Avebury Manor and the Barn Gallery is a 16th-century building that was originally used as a threshing barn also for the Manor.

The dovecot at Avebury Manor was used to house pigeons or doves. This structure dates back to 1802 and inside, there are about 900 nesting boxes for the birds, arranged in tiers. The dovecot was used to provide meat, eggs, and feathers for the manor house. One of the uses of the feathers was to use them for quills to write.
