Seascape With No Future. Gulf of Finland at Sunset

A nice thing is that, by means of photography, we keep a record of history. Streets and the lifestyle change through the years, sometimes a few are enough for a significant shift.

I have captured the history of St. Petersburg, Russia just two days ago during a bicycle trip around my district, Vasilyevsky Island.

This is the mouth of the Smolenka River, fortified by granite, with the Gulf of Finland on the horizon.

The stone parapets were constructed in the late Soviet time within a grand plan of creating the sea facade of the city. However, the country with a bright future collapsed and the area became a wasteland. (This is when I appeared in the scene for the first time, as a youth with an interest in abandoned places. More than 20 years ago).

In the 2010s, new intentions arose.

They have already built a residential area and a passenger port on lands reclaimed from the sea there. As well as a highway that dives under the ground right below the river mouth.

The sandy area on the left is a land reclaimed from the sea last years (on google.map). The orange arrow shows the location of the river mouth

Reclaiming territories will go on, they have big plans including new metro stations. The Smolenka River will be prolonged, there will be high-rise buildings on the left and right instead of the sea and sky. The view I have photographed might disappear in several years.
