Who has been generous and generous with you?

Who can you be generous with today?

• Read: 1 Timothy 6: 17-19

Carla was walking down the narrow aisle of the plane with Lucy, her eleven-month-old daughter, and her oxygen machine. They were traveling to seek treatment for their baby's chronic lung disease. Shortly after moving into their shared seat, a flight attendant approached them to tell her that a first-class passenger wanted to swap her seat. With tears of gratitude streaming down her face, Carla headed for the most spacious seat, while the benevolent stranger went to hers.

That benefactor embodied the kind of generosity that Paul encouraged in his letter to Timothy. He told him to instruct those in his care "to do good, to be rich in good works, generous and generous," (1 Timothy 6:18). Paul points out that it is tempting to become arrogant and place hope in the riches of this world. Instead, he suggests that we focus on living a life of generosity and service to others, being "wealthy" in good deeds, like the 2D grabbing man on Carla's flight.

Whether we have abundance or something is missing, we can all experience the richness of living generously while sharing what we have with others. When we do, Paul affirms that "[we] lay hold on eternal life" (v. 19)

God, give me a generous spirit as I renew my hope in you.

Carla caminaba por el angosto pasillo del avión con Lucy, su hija de once meses, y su máquina de oxígeno. Viajaban a buscar un tratamiento para la enfermedad pulmonar crónica de su beba. Poco después de ubicarse en su asiento compartido, una aeromoza se les acercó para decirle que un pasajero en primera clase quería intercambiarle el asiento. Con lágrimas de gratitud cayendo por su rostro, Carla se dirigió hacia el asiento más espacioso, mientras el benevolente desconocido fue al de ella.

Aquel benefactor encarnaba la clase de generosidad que alentaba Pablo en su carta a Timoteo. Le dijo que instruyera a los que estaban bajo su cuidado a «que hagan bien, que sean ricos en buenas obras, dadivosos, generosos» (1 Timoteo 6:18). Pablo señala que es tentador volverse arrogante y colocar la esperanza en las riquezas de este mundo. Sugiere, en cambio, que nos concentremos en vivir una vida de generosidad y servicio a los demás, siendo «ricos» en buenas obras, como el hombre del asiendo 2D en el vuelo de Carla.

Ya sea que tengamos abundancia o que nos falte algo, todos podemos experimentar la riqueza de vivir con generosidad mientras compartimos con otros lo que tenemos. Cuando lo hacemos, Pablo afirma que «[echamos] mano de la vida eterna» (v. 19).

Dios, dame un espíritu generoso al renovar mi esperanza en ti.
