For centuries, lighthouses have been one of the symbols of human civilization and its achievements. To light the way of ships in the ancient world was a miracle. Even today, for sailors, lighthouses are a symbol of hope and expectation of an imminent return. The predecessors of today's lighthouses were fires lit on hilltops, the earliest references to which are found in the Iliad and Odyssey. According to Homer, the Euboean prince Palamedes was the creator of the first lighthouse.

The light it emitted, coming from a large fire, and reflected through mirrors, could be seen 50 km into the sea. The lighthouse is a tall tower and for its time was one of the tallest man-made structures in the area.

In the upper part there was a metal concave mirror that reflected the sunlight during the day and the light of burning tar or oil at night.

Nature, as well as the sea, can be deceptively calm. At one moment, gentle and revealing the most beautiful of natural charms, and at the next - cruel and destructive forces that sweep away everything before them. The sea is a treacherous beast and nothing seems to stop it in its tracks except the lighthouse. It is as if this "little David" will be swallowed up by the "terrible sea beast Goliath" at any moment, but he resists another threatening wave. So it has been and so it will be throughout the ages!

Headlamps are still used today, but they are not as necessary as they once were. Thanks to advances in navigational technology, many lighthouses have been shut down due to the cost of maintaining them.
