B&W PHOTOGRAPHY AND ART CONTEST - The Cave
According to a legend, somewhere in the world there are people who live all their lives, from childhood, in an underground cave-like dwelling, with their legs and necks chained in shackles. Because of the shackles, they cannot turn their heads, so they can only see what is in front of them. Behind them is a fire that illuminates the cave, and between them and the fire is a wall. On the other hand, people pass by the wall carrying various things, protruding above the wall, statues of people and figures of animals made of stone and wood in different ways. Prisoners all their lives see on the wall only the shadows of these objects created by the glow of the fire, and perceive nothing but these shadows as true. If one of them is released, he must first get used to the shocking sight in the fire and to those objects whose shadows he had seen until then and considered real. Once he gets used to the fact of the Cave and begins to navigate it, he will find that there are steps that lead to the exit. If he made a great and sustained effort, he would be able to emerge from the shadow world and stand beyond the cave. There, on the free land, he will have to get used to the glare of the bright light for a long time, which will blind his eyes at first.
Once he gets used to the light, he will be able to calmly observe the things themselves as they are: the earth, the trees, the sky... Only then would he be able to see the sun as it really is and understand that it is the one who rules everything. Once he realized this, that person could not return to the cave and live as before. But at the same time he will feel pity and sympathy for his comrades who remained in chains. So he returns and begins to convince the inmates of the cave that what they see and hear are illusions and that the truth of things must be sought beyond the underground space.
Most of the prisoners will not believe him, laugh at him or criticize him or kill him to shut him up. However, he may be able to help free more brave people, and so the whole process continues.
