You are correct, no mountains where I am, and yet there are stones. Every year, the earth heaves up new stones and the farmers need to pick them out of their fields. I like to collect them when I can so I can line them around my garden beds. I am always looking for more stones.
In my area there are only calcareous stones. Granite is brought from other places.
