There is a large number of deer where I live. I mean thousands and thousands of deer and every single one of them is suicidal. They seem to hide in ditches and behind shrubs until they see a vehicle drive down the highway. Then suddenly, at the last moment, they leap out in front of the vehicle and everyone involved dies violently.

I wish I was exaggerating.

Ok, perhaps I am exaggerating that everyone involved dies, but many people do die when they collide with a deer. In 2018, there were over 12000 insurance claims that involved driving into a deer. Every fall, the highway between my house and the city is littered with dead deer. Sometimes you can see a coyote snacking on them, but most of the time it is just ravens.

Often people will see the deer hit by a car, cut off the good parts, and then bring home the meat. You have to get it fast though, before the police see you. The police do not care if you eat the deer, they just need to be sure that no one drove over the deer on purpose.

The other thing that some people do is pick up a deer from the road and bring it into the wildlife office where an officer inspects the deer to make sure that it was not killed on purpose. Then it is finders keepers for the person that found it and they may legally bring it home and eat it.

Isn't it nice of the deer to accommodate us in this way?

You do not have to rely on finding roadkill to enjoy deer meat. Every season there are local people who buy a hunting license for deer. Usually I will have at least 1 or 2 deer in my freezer.

The overpopulation of deer has led to many problems, not the least of which is disease. Unfortunately, chronic wasting disease was spread to Saskatchewan deer by an elk herd from North Dakota. Since the 1980s, this epidemic of chronic wasting disease has continued to infect deer to the point that it is now a bit of a crisis. Hunters in Saskatchewan are encouraged to bring samples of any deer they kill to the authorities for testing.

There have been no cases of chronic wasting disease spreading to humans, but there is fear that it might happen one day. Deer meat is an important food source in this region, especially for the indigenous population that has traditionally relied on deer meat for many centuries.

There may be a time when this important food source disappears completely.

Venison is good food! We have an awful lot of dear around here, and we live somewhat in suburbia... they eat the tulips and our vegetable gardens and are pretty much a nuisance.

The babies are very cute, in the early spring, though!

Oh yes, it is the same here. They jump right over the fence to eat my vegetables and strip the bark off my seedling trees. To keep the deer out, we need a 6 foot fence, which is not always in our best interests. The farmers hate them because the deer gobble up their grain.

Once upon a time I was engaged in hunting. Now for several years he had not taken a gun in his hands. When there are so many deer, it is not a very difficult target to hunt :)
There are practically no deer in our forests, but there are moose. True, there are not so many of them.
It's a shame your deer are plagued

We have a lot of moose. A LOT OF MOOSE. They are also an important food source. We have everything, actually. I live within 30 minutes to the largest city in my province, but the wildlife is everywhere. I like it.

It is very comfortable. Something from megalopolises is needed for life and such an opportunity is nearby. But nature is more important and it is everywhere. You settled well)))

Thanks! Many of us joke that we live in Siberia, but it has it's advantages.

I think I would agree to live in your conditions, like Siberia ... but sometimes I would go to the sea to warm my bones :-))

HAHA! Yes. Actually, it is very hot in the summer months. Soon you will hear me complaining about the heat.

Well ... it's good to have a place to complain and cry :-)) LoL
